Somewhere along the way, I got really, really into vampires. And the weird thing is that not a lot of people know this (or knew this, before Twilight), and in fact I forget it myself a lot. I was obsessed with an illustrated edition of Dracula when I was in middle school; wrote a really, really bad vampire novel in high school; read a few Anne Rice books, didn't really get into them; did Van Helsing in Fifteen Minutes as my first movie parody; and started writing Black Ribbon in 2003. But all along that way, there was Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and Pirates of the Caribbean and His Dark Materials and really, if you'd asked me, I would have said I was extremely susceptible to movies with swords in them and big, mainstream YA fantasy. The whole vampire thing didn't really rear its fanged head--since I was quietly working on Black Ribbon for those five years without giving all that many plot details--until 2008. And then, dear God, did it rear with a vengeance.
