THE AUDIENCE: *crickets*

The sound of crickets chirping where a response would normally be heard, to indicate a state of nonamusement or nonplussedness. Frequently used as a gag in TV and movies. Note: Should be understood as *crickets (are heard)*, as opposed to the way M15M stage directions work, which is as a verb--i.e., it's not meant to be read as "the audience is cricketing." No, this could not be any more convoluted.
